Grant Updates

Schuylkill Highlands Mini Grant Awarded Project Update:

• Pike Township celebrated the opening of the new bridge and new trail connection to Weidner Park on August 17th.


• The Colebrookdale Railroad Preservation Trust and Redevelopment Authority of Berks County just completed an Implementation Plan and Economic Impact Analysis for a heritage railway development on the Colebrookdale Railroad. This RR line goes from Pottstown to Boyertown. The study projects an economic benefit to the regional area of $7M and 200 new full time jobs based on first year 20,000 to 25,000 expectant visitors. Subsequent years result in nearly $1M in economic benefit yearly, and sustaining 80 full time jobs. This is just the catalyst that the Schuylkill Highlands Compatible Economic Development Plan for the Middle Schuylkill region suggests is needed. • Natural Lands Trust just completed a Stewardship Plan for Coventry Woods


• Berks Conservancy completed work suggested in the Boyertown Source Water Protection Plan


• Upper Hanover is leading a 7 municipal wayfinding system for the Upper Perkiomen area.


• Berks County Parks and Recreation Department is working on a stream bank restoration planting project along Tulpehocken Creek at Gring’s Mill.


• Hay Creek Valley Historical Association has a new interpretive station at Joanna Furnace.


• French and Pickering Creeks Conservation Trust is creating a trail to handicap fishing point at Tri-Town along with signage to access this French Creek location for public access.


• French and Pickering Creeks Conservancy and Green Valleys Association are collaborating on an assessment of the French Creek.


• The Schuylkill Canal is completing a new brochure of the canal trail connections.


• Pine Creek Watershed completed a new website– check it out Oley Hills Alive http://www.oleyhillsalive.org/


• National Audubon Society completed a Bird Town Program and brochure for the Unami Creek Valley and Green Lane regional areas of the Schuylkill Highlands Conservation Landscape.


• Delaware Riverkeeper completed a Feasibility Study to forecast pathogens for safe recreational water use on the Schuylkill River between Pottstown and Phoenixville.


• Speakers House walking tour, signage and garden in Trappe are progressing.


• North Coventry Township is completing some park improvements to Kenilworth Park.
